Here are the new books that are available to check out! As always, they cover a variety of topics. There's sports, WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, and more! Most exciting is that there is a new I Survived book! This one is called The Great Molasses Flood and if you haven't heard about the molasses flood in Boston then you definitely need to check this out! Molasses is just like syrup only much thicker. Can you imagine trying to outrun 2.3 MILLION gallons of molasses??? Or what it would be like to get caught by it since it's too thick to swim through like water? This excellent book will teach you about one of the weirdest events in American history, so put a hold on it today! New this week as well is The Oceans Between Stars. This book is actually the sequel to Last Day on Mars, which takes place on....Mars! In that book, the earth's sun is going to explode so mankind has to find a new planet in a new galaxy to cultivate and live on. The story focuses on the last few people on Mars who are finalizing preparations to leave. But Liam, the main character, gets trapped on Mars because someone sabotages the base before he can leave. You can pick up The Oceans Between Stars and read it alone, but I strongly suggest grabbing Last Day on Mars to read first. Below are the covers of this week’s new books. To read about them, log into your library account (Destiny) and look up the title. If you like it, hold it!

Banned Books Week is always the last week of September. It celebrates the freedom all Americans have to read freely and promotes openness and inclusiveness in what we read. Did you know that thousands of books are challenged every year? A challenged book is a book someone thinks is inappropriate, so they try to get it taken off the library shelf so no one can check it out. Every year, hundreds of these challenged books are actually removed from library shelves! Banned Books Week draws attention to this issue. Check out the link below for the 25 most frequently banned books. Then, if you would like to help raise awareness, you can read one aloud and have it posted to the American Library Association YouTube Channel. There are some guidelines on how long you can read so you aren't breaking copyright law. It's a quick 3-minute video, so it won't take you long to do and you can help make a difference by promoting free reading! Remember, you can enter your last name on the form, but you have to only say your first name in the video itself or it will not ea accepted! Getting involved is easy! Just select a book from the link below on the left. Then click the link on the right to view guidelines for submitting your video! Easy-peasy! We have almost all of these books in the library, so be sure to hold one if you need it! |
