Good afternoon, all! I hope you are enjoying your Halloween weekend! Here is the last scary book trailer/talk of the month. So if you think it is interesting and would like to keep the spooky Halloween vibes going into November, be sure to click the library catalog button below, log in, and hold the book (How to Hang a Witch). This book is extra special because the context is true. The Salem Witch Trials were truly a unique time in American history in which neighbors turned on neighbors and blatantly innocent people were freely sentenced to death. While this book doesn’t take place in that time frame (it’s a modern-day setting), the story certainly shows the consequences of unfounded fear and decisions based on revenge. I hope you enjoy this trailer, which was created by Random House, and take the time to check out this truly creepy book!

Happy almost Halloween, everyone! I know many PHIS students love reading scary stories at this time of year , so I am sharing a book with you that has been super popular since it came in. IF you have read it, you can drop in a comment about how much you love it (everyone who has read it HAS loved it!). If you haven't, check out the book trailer below and if you like it, place a hold on it! Pablo Picasso was born on 10/25 in 1881! Don’t know much about Picasso? That’s okay! According to Biography.com, Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer considered one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century. Picasso is credited, along with Georges Braque, with the creation of Cubism. Cubism is, according to the dictionary, an early 20th-century style and movement in art, especially painting, in which perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and use was made of simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and, later, collage. Here are some images of cubism so you can see what it looks like! It’s very distinctive and shows up regularly once you start looking for it. If you want to read more about Picasso or about different styles of art, you have a library for that! We have a sizable art collection that ranges from biographies to “how-to” books, so you are sure to find something you love! Just type in “art” and scroll through the results! On October 18, 1963, a stray cat named Felicette became the first cat astronaut! She orbited earth for 15 minutes and was sent up by French astronauts to study the effects space travel would have on brains. Felicette survived the flight but passed away a few weeks later. Poor Felicette was never given a memorial, so in 2017 a Kickstarter was started to give her a proper memorial in honor of giving her life for science. Just under $52,000 was donated to give her a proper memorial! You can visit her at the International Space University (ISU) in Strasbourg, France. OR you can just check out the cool picture below! Every year, about 3.4 million cats enter a homeless pet shelter and need adopting. If your family has been thinking of getting a pet, you can honor Felicette by adopting an adult cat from a local shelter! And before you do that, you can check out these awesome books from the library that tell stories about cats or teach you how to care for them so you are fully prepared for what it takes to be a cat-mom or cat-dad! Halloween is only 15 days away! Are you ready with an amazing costume? Still thinking about what you want to be? This year it’s crazy important that you rock an amazing costume because the next time Halloween falls on a Saturday is in 2026! So long from now! Today is a special day in American history! In 1775, the US Navy was established! Here is some interesting background for you from the national website!
What mission guides all actions of the Surface Navy? “The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.” How is this mission achieved? Sea control means total control of the seas for the free movement of all. It means control of set air, surface, and subsurface areas, when and where needed. Sea control is crucial to national strategy. It allows the Navy to use the oceans as barriers for defense and as avenues to extend influence and assistance where it is needed. Well suited for strategic placement the world over, the surface force employs hundreds of units with advanced capabilities to achieve this function. Want to learn more about the Navy or other US military branches? You have a library for that! We have lots of books covering military vehicles, wars, branches of the military, and more! Place a hold on what you like and I will deliver it for you! To do so, log in to your Destiny account and search up what you are interested in. Don’t limit yourself to the Navy. We have books on the military branches! October 12th is the 41st anniversary of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Haven’t read it? That’s okay! It’s an adult book series that is funny and says a lot about what it means to be a human. As you get older, and after you read this book, you will notice a TON of references to this book in pop culture. Here’s just a few that you may have come across already without knowing where they came from:
